Globe Telecom has partnered with SpaceX’s Starlink to deploy Direct-to-Cell satellite connectivity in the Philippines.

This technology allows normal smartphones to connect directly to satellites. No need for a Starlink satellite dish. It supports texting, 4G LTE data connectivity, and voice calls via messaging apps.

The service uses Starlink’s constellation of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites to extend mobile coverage to remote and underserved areas. It is also intended for use during disasters such as when typhoons knock out land-based cell sites.

Direct-to-Cell works by turning satellites into space-based cell sites. Unlike satellite phones, it does not require special hardware. Standard smartphones can connect using existing cellular frequencies, subject to device and network support.

Globe said the satellite service will complement its terrestrial mobile network. It will initially support basic services such as SMS and emergency communications.

The rollout is estimated to begin by the end of March, pending regulatory approvals and technical readiness.

Globe has yet to disclose pricing, supported devices, and full commercial availability details.
