NEW Huawei MatePad Tablet Unboxing and First Impressions

by Daniel Gubalane on Jun 22, 2021

The NEW Huawei MatePad is an upgraded version of Huawei’s mid-range tablet with a more affordable price tag.

It still has the same matte body, a 10.4-inch FullView display, quad speakers tuned by Harman/Kardon, and a large 7,250mAh battery. Now, it also comes with Wi-Fi 6 connectivity and 128GB of expandable storage.

What’s inside the box?

Unboxing the NEW Huawei MatePad tablet.

The NEW Huawei MatePad comes in a textured white box with rose gold prints.

Opening the box immediately reveals the tablet. Underneath the tablet are two smaller boxes – one has a 25W charger while the other one has a USB Type-C cable, documentation, and an ejector pin.

Retail units may come with a free MatePad Flip Cover worth ₱990 but that depends on the store.

How does it feel?

A fresh start with the NEW Huawei MatePad tablet.

Thanks to its matte finish at the back, the NEW Huawei MatePad feels grippy. It also has just enough narrow bezels for the thumbs to rest on while holding the device.

In landscape orientation, the power button is ergonomically placed on the top left side. Pressing this lights up the impressively large display.

It has TÜV Rheinland certification for low blue light levels and this translates to less eye strain when using the tablet.

Using the tablet for the first time

Setting up the tablet is easy. Apps can be downloaded from the Huawei AppGallery or the Petal Search widget while Google apps such as YouTube have to be accessed through the browser.

It’s powered by a Kirin 810 chipset and 4GB RAM. Performance is smooth in web browsing, social media scrolling, and gaming. I’ve played Mobile Legends and Asphalt 9 without major lags. The quad-speaker system also provides bassy surround audio perfect for gaming and watching covers on YouTube.

The 8 Megapixel rear camera has acceptable quality but the 8 Megapixel ultra-wide front camera is outstanding. There’s plenty of storage space for photos and its large battery also seems promising.
