After months of waiting, Xiaomi Redmi 1S users can finally upgrade their phone to MIUI 6 which is based on Android Kitkat.

MIUI 6 offers a more modern user interface compared to MIUI5 that the Redmi 1S shipped with last year. It also has improved RAM management, better notifications, one hand usage and a myriad of new themes.

Here’s how MIUI 6 looks like on the Redmi 1S:

The MIUI 6 update should be available to all users via OTA in the coming days. If you’re eager to install it manually, here’s the download link (642.3MB).

Rename the zip file to update.zip and put it in your phone’s internal storage. It should be outside any folder.

Go to the Updater app, tap the Menu button and choose Reboot to Recovery mode. Your Redmi 1S will now go to recovery mode where you can install the update using the volume buttons to navigate.
