Good news for students!

You will be able to view Wikipedia for free on your phone from Sept. 5, 2014 to February 3, 2015 – hurray!

This is a collaboration between Smart Communications, Inc. and the Wikimedia Foundation which operates the largest online encyclopedia. This will be available to the 68.9 million subscribers of Smart, TNT and Sun Cellular.

Free Wikipedia Access
Using the Wikipedia Android app for free!

Wikipedia contains more than 30 million articles about a myriad of topics plus images that are optimized for mobile devices. You can view it on  m.wikipedia.org and zero.wikipedia.org using your phone’s browser.

Smartphone users can also install the Wikipedia app and browse articles free of charge.

A banner on top of Wikipedia will say that your are using Free Data in accessing it and a warning will also pop up when you try to visit other sites in order to prevent unnecessary charges.

Aside from providing free Wikipedia access, the partnership between Smart and Wikimedia will also result in training programs for teachers in using Wikipedia.

No, you won’t be taught how to copy and paste Wikipedia articles for your assignments! Instead, these teachers will encourage students to use proper citation and critical thinking when reading anything on the internet.

You are also encouraged to contribute to Wikipedia. The online encyclopedia is written by volunteers all over the world.
