The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5A Prime is another budget smartphone from Xiaomi. It boasts a 16 Megapixel front camera for ‘effortlessly gorgeous selfies’.

I’ll be using the device during the next several weeks but let’s focus on the unboxing experience first. This includes the contents of the box, design of the smartphone and that headlining selfie camera.

What’s in the box of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5A Prime?

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5A Prime comes in a small dual-tone orange and white box. Lifting the orange part of the box reveals the device while its accessories are below it.

There’s not much inside the box though. Its accessories include a microUSB cord, charger and SIM ejector tool only. The quick start guide, a three-fold pamphlet, is the last item I got out of the box.

As usual for Xiaomi smartphones, no earphones are included in the package.

Holding the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5A Prime gives off a slight budget vibe since the phone body is made up of plastic. Nevertheless, the metallic finish as well as the slightly curved edges of the front panel make it look good and a bit premium.

It’s usable with one hand but it would have been better if the bezels are trimmed down by a millimeter or two. Meanwhile, touching the fingerprint sensor at the back quickly unlocks the device.

The screen itself is bright enough although the HD resolution is noticeable. Thankfully, the MIUI 9 user interface looks good and works smoothly. I have used Xiaomi devices before and the additional software features are useful.

One other thing I noticed is the presence of an Infrared blaster at the top of the device. This enables it to serve as a universal remote controller for televisions, air conditioning units and other appliances.

16 Megapixel Selfie Camera

I took a quick selfie using the 16 Megapixel front camera of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5A Prime. The result has a fair amount of details, slightly lightened skin tone and good overall quality.

Here’s another photo shot with the 13 Megapixel rear camera.

Both sample pictures look good but the low light performance is still questionable. I’ll take the device for a spin and get back with a full review soon.

Special thanks to Widget City for providing the review unit. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5A Prime is available at Widget City with a free Smart SIM Card.
