One of Instagram’s defining features is its use of square pictures. Rectangular ones are either cropped or needed to be edited using another app.

However, version 7.5 of the app on both iOS and Android platforms now supports portrait and landscape images. This opens up a more possibilities of creativity from its users but also removes the uniformity that square pictures provide.

Instagram Now Supports Non-square Photographs
This is how a landscape picture appears on Instagram.

Supporting non-square images means no more cropped friends in group photos, better photographs of bridges and other landscapes and better support for videos.

“We’re especially excited about what this update means for video on Instagram, which in widescreen can be more cinematic than ever”, the company said in an official blog post.

To experience Instagram without the restriction of square images, update it to version 7.5 on iOS or Android.
